Mahzuni Şerif (1939-2002) was a Turkish folk musician, songwriter and poet who was born in the province of Kahramanmaraş. He is considered as one of the most important figures in Turkish folk music and is known for his unique style of singing and his meaningful lyrics that often tackled social and political issues in Turkey.
Mahzuni Şerif's songs are deeply rooted in the traditions and culture of Anatolia and often infused with melancholy and nostalgia, reflecting the experiences of Turkish rural and working-class people. Some of his most famous songs include "Domates Biber Patlican" (Tomatoes, Peppers, and Eggplants), "Gelevera Deresi" (River Gelevera), and "Nedir Ne Değildir" (What is it, what is not).
In addition to his musical career, Mahzuni Şerif was also a human rights activist and spoke out against oppression and injustice in Turkey. He was imprisoned several times for his political views and activism.
Mahzuni Şerif died in Istanbul in 2002 at the age of 63, leaving behind a rich legacy of music and activism that continues to inspire generations of Turkish folk artists.
